KNYSNA AIDS COUNCIL MARKS WORLD AIDS DAY 2005
Knysna AIDS Council (KAC) marked World AIDS Day this week with a resounding "Dankie!  to its supporters in 2005 -- and a commitment to expand its outreach programmes even further in 2006.

To mark the day, the Council sponsored a
Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday, 30 November.

Jess Levy Interact President from Oakhill School
spoke about the impact that HIV/Aids has on us all.

Millicent Seela, director of Knysna AIDS Council,
said 2005 has been an extremely successful
year for the Council, with new support coming
from businesses including Fruit & Veg City, The Wool Shop, SuperSpar, Protea Hotel and Mackintosh's grocery. At the same time, she warned that major challenges lie ahead in 2006.

"We have to look much more seriously at the issue of funding. Everything in 2006 will depend on whether we are getting funding or not,  said Seela, who noted that without additional funds, the Council may be forced to shut down.

"All of us are fond of saying that the government is going to do something about HIV/AIDS, but it is not really the government that is suffering,"

Seela added. "It is the people here in Knysna who are affected, as well as the companies that employ them. So we need to look to the local community for more help."
